Commending Michael Hershman.

WHEREAS, Michael Hershman of McLean is commended for his recognition in 2008 by Ethisphere Institute as one of the 100 most influential people in business ethics; and

WHEREAS, Ethisphere Institute researched and compiled a list of 100 individuals from around the world who greatly influenced business ethics during 2008; and

WHEREAS, Michael Hershman began his career in the military as a special agent with United States Military Intelligence; after the military, he then moved to investigations of government misconduct and financial fraud and several other government investigator positions; and

WHEREAS, recognized for his investigative prowess, Michael Hershman served as deputy staff director for the Subcommittee on International Organizations of the United States House of Representatives and deputy auditor general for the Foreign Assistance Program of the United States Agency for International Development; and

WHEREAS, Michael Hershman today serves as president and CEO of the risk management firm the Fairfax Group and is cofounder of the global anticorruption organization Transparency International; and

WHEREAS, in 2006 the Fairfax Group was appointed as an independent compliance advisor to a German multinational company that had a culture of corruption and was being investigated for bribery; and

WHEREAS, Michael Hershman spent almost two years at the company’s German location and other locations around the world helping revise the company’s corporate compliance and governance policies and procedures as well as its corporate culture; and

WHEREAS, Michael Hershman joins an elite list of people from around the world who have boldly stepped forward to battle against unethical business practices; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Michael Hershman on his selection as one of the 100 most influential people in business ethics in 2008 by Ethisphere Institute; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Michael Hershman as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his integrity and dedication to ethical behavior in business.
