A governing body may provide in the ordinance that the applicant must submit documentation that any development in an area of the locality of known historical or archaeological significance will preserve or accommodate the historical or archaeological resources. During such period, the locality shall conduct a formal review to ascertain whether the project site has the potential to contain significant archaeological resources that will necessitate further studies by the applicant to determine the archaeological significance of the site and actions that the applicant must undertake to protect or preserve significant archaeological resources.
