2008 SPECIAL SESSION II
WHEREAS, Troy Wells, a member of the Martinsville High School athletic staff for 29 years, will step down from his position in 2008 as head coach of the boys’ varsity basketball team; and
WHEREAS, Coach Wells was hired as an assistant boys’ basketball coach at Martinsville High School in 1979 and became the school’s celebrated head coach in 1995; and
WHEREAS, an excellent and highly successful head coach, Troy Wells achieved an overall coaching record of 223 wins and 85 losses; and
WHEREAS, always a mentor and inspiration to his players, Coach Wells led the Martinsville High School Bulldogs to nine Piedmont District championships, seven regional championships, and three state championships, the last capping the 2005–2006 season with a major upset against formidable state rival Robert E. Lee High School of Staunton; and
WHEREAS, the recipient of many accolades over the years, Coach Wells has been a nine-time Piedmont District Coach of the Year, a two-time Virginia High School League State Coach of the Year, a two-time Roanoke Times Timesland Coach of the Year, and a two-time Associated Press Coach of the Year; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Troy Wells on his longtime commitment to high school athletics and the young people of the Commonwealth; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Troy Wells as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for his many achievements and best wishes in all of his future endeavors.
