SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 6024
Commending the James River High School baseball team.

WHEREAS, the 2008 James River High School baseball team capped an exciting season by winning the Virginia High School League Group AAA state baseball championship on June 7, 2008; and

WHEREAS, Chesterfield County’s James River High School (24–4) defeated Colonial Forge High School (20–9), by a score of 10–0 in the state title game and returned home with the school’s second consecutive state Group AAA baseball championship; and

WHEREAS, on the way to the state tournament, the James River High School Rapids defeated Cosby High School, 6–3, to clinch the Central Region tournament title and advanced by means of hard-earned victories over Albemarle High School in the state quarterfinals and Bethel High School in the semifinals; and

WHEREAS, the James River High School baseball team was led by excellent pitching by seniors Austin Stadler and Daniel Marrs in the three state tournament matchups; and

WHEREAS, in the state championship final game, leadoff hitter Austin McGowan added three hits and a walk to the excellent offensive showing by all of the Rapids, who pummeled four different Colonial Forge pitchers; and

WHEREAS, outstanding and talented players Garrett Bardenheier, Matt Brooks, Carter Brown, Jack Cleary, Gil Evans, Michael Granger, Ian Harvey, Taylor Jaszewski, Zack Lucas, Jake Matthews, Sean Monahan, Robert Oldham, Zac Patrick, Eamon Schwartz, Ted Scruggs, and Luke Thomas also made significant contributions in a tremendous team effort in the championship games and throughout the season; and

WHEREAS, the triumphant performance of the 2008 Rapids is a tribute to the talent, dedication, and perseverance of the players; the leadership of Head Coach Pete Schumacher and his staff; and the support of the parents, students, and faculty of James River High School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the Rapids from James River High School as the Virginia High School League Group AAA state baseball champions; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Pete Schumacher as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the 2008 James River High School baseball team’s outstanding 2008 season.
