WHEREAS, Drew Benny Williams of Norfolk, a respected citizen and great community supporter, died on January 4, 2008; and

WHEREAS, the middle child among 11 brothers and sisters, Drew Williams was born on January 22, 1941, in Detroit, Michigan, the son of the late Walter and Bessie Williams; and

WHEREAS, Drew Williams attended Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina; was drafted and honorably served his country in the United States Army in Vietnam; and after his military service, earned a bachelor's degree in economics and philosophy and began postgraduate work at Eastern Michigan University; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated family man, Drew Williams was happily married to his wife of more than 39 years, Regina V. K. Williams, and the couple were the proud parents of three children, Traci, Kristin, and Drew Michael, and the doting grandparents to 10 grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Drew Williams made many valuable contributions throughout his 25-year  professional career, working in administrative positions for the Southeastern Michigan Transportation Authority, the County of Washtenaw, and Saint Joseph Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and as the director of human resources and labor relations for Best Products, Inc., after moving to Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Drew Williams gave his time and considerable talents to many charitable and civic organizations over the years, including the United Way, the American Red Cross of Norfolk, and the Elizabeth River Project; and

WHEREAS, a great mentor of young people, Drew Williams enthusiastically served as a volunteer tennis instructor for disadvantaged children, a facilitator for Norfolk United Facing Race, and a board member for the Southeast Junior Golf Association; and

WHEREAS, Drew Williams was a faithful member of the Basilica of Saint Mary of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Norfolk, where he was a religious instructor and active in the church's many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, Drew Williams will be fondly remembered for his kind and generous nature and greatly missed by his devoted wife, children, and other loving family members and his numerous friends and admirers in the Norfolk community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding Virginian, Drew Benny Williams; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Drew Benny Williams as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
