WHEREAS, Charles W. Jackson of Montross, a beloved citizen and the admired sheriff of Westmoreland County for 32 years, died on May 17, 2008; and

WHEREAS, as sheriff of Westmoreland County, Charles W. “Buddy” Jackson was the second-longest-serving head law-enforcement officer among the Commonwealth’s 123 sheriffs; and

WHEREAS, Sheriff Jackson retired on December 31,2007, after more than three decades of outstanding service to the citizens of Westmoreland County; and

WHEREAS, an experienced and exemplary public servant, Sheriff Jackson served nine years as a Virginia state trooper assigned to Westmoreland County before being elected sheriff in 1975 at a time when the sheriff’s office had only seven employees; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated and able administrator, Sheriff Jackson provided excellent leadership during his tenure, overseeing many changes and improvements to the Westmoreland County Sheriff’s Office and its services; and

WHEREAS, Sheriff Jackson was instrumental in the establishment of the Rappahannock Regional Police Academy to train deputies and the Northern Neck Regional Jail to house prisoners; and

WHEREAS, widely known for his fairness and his commitment to justice for all of the residents of Westmoreland County, Sheriff Jackson won the respect of the legal and law-enforcement communities and his fellow citizens; and

WHEREAS, Sheriff Jackson gave his time and expertise to many civic and professional organizations over the years, including serving a term as the president of the Virginia Sheriff's Association; and

WHEREAS, Sheriff Jackson received countless awards and accolades for his tireless support of his community and his many contributions to excellence in law enforcement; and

WHEREAS, throughout his distinguished career, Sheriff Jackson was steadfastly committed to the safety and well-being of his neighbors and the enforcement of the laws of the Commonwealth and Westmoreland County; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the loss of a fine law-enforcement officer and outstanding Virginian, Charles W. Jackson; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Charles W. Jackson as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
