Commending Eva Teig Hardy.

WHEREAS, Eva Teig Hardy, an outstanding business leader and dedicated public servant, is retiring September 1, 2008, from Dominion Resources; and

WHEREAS, a native of Egypt, Eva Sayegh was 13 when she immigrated to Portsmouth, Virginia, with her family; and

WHEREAS, Eva Teig Hardy earned a bachelor's degree from Hood College and a master’s degree from The American University; and

WHEREAS, working first in the public sector, Eva Teig Hardy began her career as a teacher and then worked her way up through the ranks in both local and state government; her service of almost two decades in government included work as an urban planner for the City of Portsmouth, director of economic analysis and information in Portsmouth, Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry under Governor Charles S. Robb, and Secretary of Health and Human Resources under Governor Gerald L. Baliles, where she was ranked as the most effective woman state official and was an instrumental member of the Virginia-Israel Commission; and

WHEREAS, a gifted executive, Eva Teig Hardy then moved to the private sector, serving as vice president of government affairs at Virginia Power; she moved through the ranks, ultimately becoming senior vice president for external affairs and corporate communications at Dominion Resources where numerous former and current members of the General Assembly have relied upon her expertise in the complex issues of electric utility restructuring; and

WHEREAS, Eva Teig Hardy retired from her position as senior vice president for external affairs and corporate communications on May 12, 2008, and she will continue to serve as a senior adviser to the chairman until her retirement on September 1; and

WHEREAS, Eva Teig Hardy has received numerous awards for her outstanding leadership and service, including an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Norfolk State University, VCU’s 2005 Wilder School Public Service Award, Oliver W. Hill Citizen of the Year Award, Newsmaker of the Year Award by the Virginia Press Women, the Arab-American Institute 1987 Award for Outstanding Service and Commitment, and many others; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to community service, Eva Teig Hardy has served as a member of the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, Thomas Jefferson Institute for Public Policy board of directors, Commission on Health Care for All Virginians, Nuclear Energy Institute Executive Advisory Committee, and the State Board of Youth Services, among many others; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Eva Teig Hardy for her outstanding public service and leadership in the business community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Eva Teig Hardy as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for her accomplishments and best wishes for her future plans.
