2008 SPECIAL SESSION II
WHEREAS, the 2008 Millbrook High School boys' basketball team capped an exemplary season by winning the Virginia High School League Group AA state basketball championship before an enthusiastic crowd at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center on March 15, 2008; and
WHEREAS, in an exciting 53 - 43 victory, Frederick County's Millbrook High School Pioneers (29 - 1) defeated the Brunswick High School Bulldogs (26 - 5) to win the school’s first boys’ basketball state title; and
WHEREAS, on their way to the state championship as Region II champion, the Pioneers won decisive games against Courtland High School, 74 – 53, in the quarterfinals and Blacksburg High School, 73 – 67, in the semifinals; and
WHEREAS, the hard-working Millbrook High School players shut out Brunswick High School for more than 11 minutes of the game from late in the first quarter to 5:47 of the third quarter and held the Bulldogs to just 29.4 percent shooting for the game; and
WHEREAS, the Millbrook High School Pioneers were led to the state title by Coach Scott Mankins and high scorers Erick Green with 18 points, Clayton Rodney with 16 points, and Calvin Rodney with 9 points and 9 rebounds; and
WHEREAS, outstanding and talented players Jordan Sugars, Andrew Oates, Dustin Pierce, Levon Williams, T.J. Williams, Cody Fazenbaker, Devin Call, Chris Hardware, Travis Hileman, Neil Bishop, and Butch Kaczmarzewski also made significant contributions in a tremendous team effort in the championship games and throughout the season; and
WHEREAS, the triumphant performance of the 2008 Pioneers is a tribute to the talent, dedication, and perseverance of the players; the leadership of Head Coach Scott Mankins and his staff; and the support of the students and faculty of Millbrook High School; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the Pioneers from Millbrook High School on their outstanding 2007 - 2008 season; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Scott Mankins as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the championship performance of the 2008 Millbrook High School boys' basketball team.
