HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 6026
Commending the Historic 1908 Courthouse in Independence.

WHEREAS, the Historic 1908 Courthouse in Independence is recognized on the occasion of its 100th anniversary in 2008; and

WHEREAS, in 1906 local leaders of Grayson County awarded the noted architect Frank Milburn the contract for the design of the new courthouse with E. L. Robbins as the builder; and

WHEREAS, the Historic 1908 Courthouse in Independence, with its Richardsonian style, large size, octagonal towers, gables, and stone and brick construction, is an exceptional piece of architecture; and

WHEREAS, the Historic 1908 Courthouse in Independence served as the Grayson County Courthouse until 1981, when a new courthouse was built; and

WHEREAS, by the early 1980s, the Historic 1908 Courthouse in Independence was in disrepair and was put up for sale by the county; and

WHEREAS, in 1985 a local businessman, Dan Baldwin, bought the building and renovated it; on July 4, 1986, he donated the building to Grayson County; and

WHEREAS, today, the Historic 1908 Courthouse in Independence, a Virginia Historical Landmark now operated under the Historic 1908 Courthouse Foundation and listed with the National Register of Historic Places, has different entertainment venues, a retail art and craft shop, and a museum for the public; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the board of directors of the Historic 1908 Courthouse in Independence Foundation on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the courthouse; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Doug Hall, president of the board of directors of the Historic 1908 Courthouse Foundation, as an expression of the General Assembly's best wishes for the next century.
