087744464WHEREAS, Donald G. Austin, who served as the county administrator for Rockbridge County for 36 years, will complete his term of service on August 1, 2008; and
WHEREAS, Donald G. Austin was first employed as the assistant county administrator in December 1970, and in June 1972, he was appointed the Rockbridge County administrator; and
WHEREAS, Donald G. Austin championed many projects that benefited the citizens of Rockbridge County and the cities of Lexington and Buena Vista; and
WHEREAS, Donald G. Austin contributed to the growth and development in Rockbridge County with the establishment of the Public Service Authority and with the establishment of the Lake Robertson Recreation Facility Agreement with the State; and
WHEREAS, Donald G. Austin assisted with the development of numerous recreational facilities, including the Natural Bridge Park, and he formed the Rockbridge Area Recreation Organization; and
WHEREAS, Donald G. Austin helped businesses in Rockbridge County obtain loans and facilitated business growth; and
WHEREAS, Donald G. Austin established, within the City of Lexington, the Maury Service Authority for water and wastewater treatment and assisted with the construction of the WWT Plant and saw to it that the plant met all the latest DEQ requirements; and
WHEREAS, Donald G. Austin assisted in the construction of a flood wall for the City of Buena Vista; and
WHEREAS, Donald G. Austin’s knowledge of business principles and the Rockbridge County area proved beneficial to both employers and local residents during his tenure as the Rockbridge County administrator; and
WHEREAS, Donald G. Austin assisted with the growth of many regional plans, including the formation of the Jail Commission to plan and construct what is now the Regional Jail and helped to construct a facility to house Dabney S. Lancaster Community College within the region; and
WHEREAS, Donald G. Austin’s commitment to serving his community as the Rockbridge County administrator required countless hours of work and study during which his family supported and encouraged his continued community service; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Donald G. Austin for his dedication and honorable service to the citizens of Rockbridge County; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Donald G. Austin as an expression of the General Assembly’s recognition of his long and venerable service during his 36-year tenure as the Rockbridge County administrator, along with every good wish for the future.
