Celebrating the life of Thomas Keister Greer.

WHEREAS, Thomas Keister Greer of Rocky Mount, a respected attorney and historian, died on May 23, 2008; and

WHEREAS, a native of West Virginia from an old Virginia family, Keister Greer was born to Golden Lillian Shaw Greer and Moses Theodrick Greer on September 28, 1921; and

WHEREAS, Keister Greer attended Andrew Lewis High School and received a bachelor's degree and a law degree from the University of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, during World War II, Keister Greer interrupted his undergraduate studies and proudly served his country as an officer in the United States Marine Corps, including service in the Pacific Theatre at Okinawa; and

WHEREAS, Keister Greer married the late Dorothy Leech Greer, and the couple had three wonderful children and were married 46 years; and

WHEREAS, hard working and energetic, Keister Greer worked as an attorney both in California and in Virginia; he was noted for his sharp legal mind and argued and won a case before the United States Supreme Court; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to serving the community, Keister Greer served on the board of visitors at his beloved University of Virginia; as chairman of the First Virginia Bank-Franklin County and the Franklin County Historical Society; and as a board member of Opera Roanoke and First Virginia Banks, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, after retirement, Keister Greer was able to indulge his lifelong love of history through a book he wrote about Franklin County, The Great Moonshine Conspiracy Trial of 1935; and

WHEREAS, Keister Greer was a faithful member of St. Thomas of Canterbury Anglican-Catholic Church; and

WHEREAS, Keister Greer will be fondly remembered for his kind and generous nature and will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 18 years, Elizabeth Taylor Greer; his daughter, Taliaferro Greer Alexander, his son, the Honorable G. Carter Greer, and their families; his stepson, Andrew Taylor Call, Esq., and his family; and numerous friends and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine attorney and historian and outstanding Virginian, Thomas Keister Greer; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Thomas Keister Greer as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
