HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 5018
Commending the Chantilly High School robotics team.

WHEREAS, the acclaimed 35-member Chantilly High School robotics team won honors and accolades at local, state, and national robotics competitions in 2008; and

WHEREAS, the Chantilly Robotics Team 612 consists of students from Chantilly High School and surrounding Fairfax County public schools, who come to the Chantilly Robotics Academy for specialized courses in engineering; and

WHEREAS, the Chantilly Robotics Team 612 annually competes in the NASA FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology) Robotics Competition, a nationally recognized NASA competition that encourages and inspires high school student teams across the nation to design, build, and test a robot in an exciting three-day tournament that awards over $3 million in scholarships to participants; and

WHEREAS, Chantilly High School’s student-led robotics team is guided in its designs for the competition by dedicated teacher-sponsor Marty Rothwell and former engineers and science specialist volunteers; and

WHEREAS, in March 2008, the dedicated and talented Chantilly Robotics Team 612 captured the top three awards presented at the Buckeye Regional FIRST Robotics Competition held in Cleveland, Ohio—the Regional Chairman’s Award, the Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers Entrepreneurship Award, and the Woodie Flowers Award—for their innovation and hard work; and

WHEREAS, the FIRST Championship, the largest event of the NASA FIRST Robotics Competition, was held April 17 - 19, 2008, in Atlanta, Georgia, with the Chantilly Robotics Team 612 winning additional accolades for its outstanding showing in the finals; and

WHEREAS, besides honing their skills between competitions, the Chantilly High School robotics team members were active in a community outreach program held at Marsteller Middle School in Prince William County, encouraging more girls to become interested in engineering, and team members also participated in the Sustainable Energy Expo in Washington, D.C., on April 20 - 22; and

WHEREAS, the triumphant performance of the 2008 Chantilly High School robotics team is a tribute to the talent, dedication, and perseverance of the team members; the leadership of Marty Rothwell and his assistants; and the support of the parents, students, and faculty of Chantilly High School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the robotics team members from Chantilly High School on their outstanding NASA FIRST Robotics Competition; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to teacher-sponsor Marty Rothwell as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the championship performance of the 2008 Chantilly High School robotics team.
