2008 SPECIAL SESSION I
WHEREAS, Earl Henson Henley, a respected citizen and outstanding Goochland County community leader, died on March 29, 2008; and
WHEREAS, a native of Manakin, Earl Henson Henley was born to Ida and Harry Henley and was one of six siblings; and
WHEREAS, Earl Henley served his country during World War II as a Marine in the Fourth Division; he bravely fought in the invasion of Iwo Jima and was present as the American flag was raised on Mount Suribachi; and
WHEREAS, upon his return to the United States, Earl Henley married his one and only love, Lois Parker Henley, and the couple was married for 61 years; and
WHEREAS, settling in his hometown of Manakin, Earl Henley opened a gas station and developed his own landscaping and fencing business, where he worked until his retirement in 1992; and
WHEREAS, committed to the well-being of his fellow citizens, Earl Henley was an organizer and charter member of Goochland’s first volunteer fire and rescue units and served as Goochland County fire chief for 34 years; and
WHEREAS, Earl Henley served the community of Goochland in numerous other capacities, including as a member of the Goochland County Board of Supervisors for 25 years, with 12 years as chairman; and
WHEREAS, Earl Henley was a member of the Goochland County School Board and Planning Commission and the Richmond Regional Planning District Commission, was a charter member of the Goochland Fellowship and Family Service, and served as president of the Virginia Association of Counties; and
WHEREAS, Earl Henley was a faithful member of Dover Baptist Church, where he served as trustee for 44 years; and
WHEREAS, in 1991 President George H. W. Bush recognized the lifelong service and dedication of Earl Henson Henley to his community by designating him as a Point of Light; and
WHEREAS, Earl Henson Henley will be fondly remembered for his kind and generous nature and will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Lois; other family members; and the community of Goochland; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine community leader and outstanding Virginian, Earl Henson Henley; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Earl Henson Henley as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
