S.B. 48 School teachers; school boards to ensure that all are provided planning time.

Planning time for school teachers. Requires school boards to ensure that all school teachers are provided at least three hours a week of unencumbered, self-directed planning time.

S.B. 169 Teaching Scholarship Loan Program; program to award scholarships to community college students.

Virginia Teaching Scholarship Loan Program. Expands the scholarship program to award scholarships to community college students pursuing prerequisites for an approved teacher education program leading to an endorsement in career and technical education.

A BILL to amend and reenact § 22.1-290.01 of the Code of Virginia, relating to the Virginia Teaching Scholarship Loan Program.

S.B. 490 No Child Left Behind Act; Board of Education to develop plan for withdrawal.

No Child Left Behind; withdrawal.  Requires the Board of Education to develop a plan for the withdrawal from the federal No Child Left Behind Act, unless waivers that allow Virginia's existing educational accountability system, as set forth in the Standards of Quality, Standards of Learning, and Standards of Accreditation, to substantially meet the requirements of the Act are granted by the U.S. Department of Education.

S.B. 655 Contractors; employees having direct contact with students on school property

Patron: Newman

Contractors; employees having direct contact with students on school property; penalty.  Provides that the contractor must certify that all persons having direct contact with students on school property under a contract for the provision of services have not been convicted of a felony barrier crime.

A BILL to amend and reenact § 22.1-296.1 of the Code of Virginia, relating to data on convictions for certain crimes required; penalty.

S.B. 721 Foods in public schools; Board & Department of Health update regulations for nutrition.

Competitive foods in public schools; report.  Requires the Board, in cooperation with the Department of Health, to promulgate and periodically update regulations setting nutritional guidelines for all competitive foods sold during the school day. Also requires (i) the Board to adopt the Governor's Nutrition and Physical Activity Scorecard's nutritional guidelines as the statewide standard for competitive foods; (ii) the Board to report to the General Assembly on the final regulations by December 1, 2010; and (iii) local school boards to report to the Department of Education on their plan to implement the final regulations by 30 days prior to the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year.

A BILL to amend the Code of Virginia by adding a section numbered 22.1-207.4, relating to nutritional guidelines for competitive foods in public schools.

S.B. 732 Class 1 misdemeanors; local law-enforcement shall report to school superintendent, etc.

Reports of Class 1 misdemeanors to school authorities.  Provides that local law-enforcement authorities shall report to the school division superintendent and to the principal or his designee all offenses, wherever committed, by students enrolled in the school if such offense would be a Class 1 misdemeanor if committed by an adult.

A BILL to amend and reenact § 22.1-279.3:1 of the Code of Virginia, relating to reports of Class 1 misdemeanors to school authorities.
