2008 SESSION
WHEREAS, Laura Anne Yacobi Bateman of Newport News, widow of former United States Representative and Virginia State Senator Herbert H. Bateman, died on February 24, 2008; and
WHEREAS, born in North Carolina, Laura Bateman spent most of her life in Newport News; she attended St. Vincent de Paul High School and after graduating from Nazareth College in Kentucky, she worked at the Langley Research Center of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics until her marriage to Herbert Bateman in 1954; and
WHEREAS, when her husband joined the House of Representatives in 1983, Laura Bateman became involved in a number of organizations in Washington, D.C., including the Congressional Club, Congressional Spouses Human Rights Forum, National Mental Health Association, Child Mental Health Interest Group, National Museum of Women in the Arts, Welcome to Washington International Club, and many others; and
WHEREAS, in Newport News, Laura Bateman was a ready and willing participant and leader in numerous community organizations including the Hilton Woman’s Club and the Virginia Bar Association Auxiliary, of which she served as the first president; and
WHEREAS, Laura Bateman served on the board of Peninsula Catholic High School and the board of directors of the Mariners’ Museum and the museum’s Bronze Door Society, and she was a faithful and longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church; and
WHEREAS, an inspiration to all who met her, Laura Bateman was a steady partner and invaluable confidant to her husband throughout his career, and she enjoyed every step of their journey together; and
WHEREAS, Laura Bateman will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her son, Herbert, and daughter-in-law, Mary; her daughter, Laura; her brothers and sisters and their spouses; her three grandchildren; and numerous other family members and dear friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Laura Anne Yacobi Bateman, a fine Virginian; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Laura Anne Yacobi Bateman as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
