SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 235
Celebrating the life of James S. Burgett.

WHEREAS, James S. Burgett, an admired and respected citizen and member of the York County Board of Supervisors, died on September 26, 2007; and

WHEREAS, James “Jim” Burgett was born on June 17, 1942, in Clovis, New Mexico, graduated from New Mexico State University, and had a distinguished 21-year career as an officer in the United States Air Force, retiring in 1984; and

WHEREAS, a resident of the Peninsula for 29 years, Jim Burgett was a commercial real estate broker and owner of his own successful realty company; and

WHEREAS, well-known for his fair but no-nonsense approach to public issues, Jim Burgett was a skilled and invaluable member of the York County Board of Supervisors for eight years, serving as chairman for three years and vice-chairman for two years; and

WHEREAS, a knowledgeable and dedicated community leader, Jim Burgett was committed to the prosperity and wise economic development of York County, as well as to providing quality public services for all of his fellow citizens; and

WHEREAS, Jim Burgett gave his time and considerable talents to numerous civic organizations over the years, including as a member of Caritas, Zweibrucken Student Selection Committee, Relay for Life, March of Dimes, American Heart Association, and York County Business Association, which is now the York County Chamber of Commerce; and

WHEREAS, a great mentor to the youth of York County, Jim Burgett served on the Youth Commission, and he inspired many promising young men and women to become involved in community activities; and

WHEREAS, always willing to lend a helping hand to his fellow residents in need, Jim Burgett was a faithful member of the Yorkminster Presbyterian Church in Grafton and was supportive of the church’s many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, Jim Burgett will be fondly remembered for his devotion to his family and his community and will be greatly missed by his beloved wife of 46 years, Dana S. Burgett; his sons Scott R. and Bradford A. Burgett and their wonderful families, including his grandchildren Sarah, Mathew, Jacob, Delaney, and Joshua; his other loving family members and special friends; and the citizens of York County; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine community leader and outstanding Virginian, James S. Burgett; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of James S. Burgett as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
