WHEREAS, Richard A. Williamson of Williamsburg, revered law professor at the Marshall-Wythe School of Law and legal counsel to The College of William and Mary and its Coordinator of Legal Affairs, died on June 22, 2007; and

WHEREAS, a native of Columbus, Ohio, Richard A. “Dick” Williamson received a bachelor’s degree in business cum laude from Ohio University in 1965 and a law degree with honors from the College of Law at Ohio State University in 1968; and

WHEREAS, Richard Williamson moved to Williamsburg in 1970 to join the faculty of the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at The College of William and Mary; and

WHEREAS, an exceptional and enthusiastic educator who always considered the well-being of his students his foremost duty, Professor Williamson challenged and inspired the students at Marshall-Wythe School of Law for many years; and

WHEREAS, during his distinguished career at The College of William and Mary, Professor Williamson served in numerous important leadership and administrative positions and was renowned as an authoritative scholar of criminal law and procedure and the founding Reporter of Decisions for the Court of Appeals of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, on Charter Day 2004, Richard Williamson was awarded the prestigious Thomas Jefferson Award, the college's highest honor to a faculty member, for his countless and invaluable contributions to the community of The College of William and Mary; and

WHEREAS, after 37 years of invaluable service to The College of William and Mary, Richard Williamson retired as Chancellor Professor of Law in April 2007; and

WHEREAS, considered over the years as a treasured asset and loyal friend of The College of William and Mary, Richard Williamson will be fondly remembered by his colleagues and students as “intellectually brilliant, immensely thoughtful, and powerfully decisive”; and

WHEREAS, Richard Williamson will be greatly missed by his devoted wife Susan; his beloved daughters, Nancy and Amy, their husbands, and five wonderful grandchildren; his other loving relatives and friends; the congregation of Williamsburg United Methodist Church; and the citizens of the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the loss of a distinguished educator and outstanding Virginian, Richard A. Williamson; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Richard A. Williamson as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
