2008 SESSION
WHEREAS, W. Q. Overton, the beloved and respected sheriff of Franklin County, retired on December 31, 2007, after 32 years of outstanding service to his community and the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, before being elected sheriff of Franklin County in 1975, W. Q. “Quint” Overton served as a dedicated Virginia State Trooper for over 14 years and as a Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control agent for 18 months; and
WHEREAS, an experienced law-enforcement officer and a knowledgeable administrator, Sheriff Overton took office on January 1, 1976, and has led the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office with great skill, integrity, and compassion; and
WHEREAS, admired by residents and his fellow law-enforcement officers, Sheriff Overton has been an exceptional role model and mentor for many young law-enforcement officers, has always been a great supporter of his associates and staff, and has implemented programs and practices to continually improve the quality of law enforcement in Franklin County; and
WHEREAS, receiving many awards and accolades over the years, Sheriff Overton was honored in December 2007 with the distinguished Marshall L. Flora Award, which is named for the founder of the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce and presented to an outstanding person who demonstrates strong involvement in the community and longtime volunteerism with the chamber and other civic organizations; and
WHEREAS, committed to the safety and security of his neighbors in Franklin County, Sheriff Overton has witnessed many changes during his tenure, and he has worked diligently to ensure that his fellow citizens received the very best law-enforcement services possible; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate W. Q. Overton for his 32 years of outstanding public service and visionary leadership of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to W. Q. Overton as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation of his many achievements and best wishes for a joyful and fulfilling retirement.
