2008 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Menchville High School marching band of Newport News is commended on its selection to perform in London’s official New Year’s Day parade in 2009, which is a part of the 23rd London Parade and Gala Concert Series; and
WHEREAS, London’s official New Year’s Day parade is supported by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the prime minister of Great Britain, the Lord Lieutenant to Greater London, and the mayor of the City of Westminster; and
WHEREAS, approximately 90 band members of the award-winning marching band will help Londoners usher in the New Year in 2009; students, parents, and the community of Newport News will be busy in 2008 raising funds to sponsor the exciting eight-day trip to England for the band members, band director Deborah Sarvay, and the group’s chaperones; and
WHEREAS, the Menchville High School marching band will also enjoy tours sponsored by Youth Music of the World, a nonprofit organization based in the United Kingdom that organizes performance travel programmes to some of the world’s most prestigious festivals and events; and
WHEREAS, the trip will also highlight academic subjects, such as English and social studies in addition to music and arts, and students will visit London landmarks and travel to Oxford, Dover, Canterbury, and Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare; and
WHEREAS, in order to finance what will be a very memorable and a once in a lifetime opportunity for many of the young people, band members will work diligently to raise money through activities such as car washes and calendar sales, as well as fund drives involving the community and area businesses; and
WHEREAS, the selection of the Menchville High School marching band to perform in the prestigious 23rd London Parade is a tribute to the talent and dedication of the band members; the leadership of director Deborah Sarvay; and the support of the school’s teachers and parents and the community of Newport News; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the Menchville High School marching band on its selection to perform in the 23rd London Parade; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to director Deborah Sarvay as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the band’s many achievements and best wishes for a joyous trip and excellent performance.
