084859250WHEREAS, Yuji Hairston, Jr., a junior at Ferrum College, bravely came to the rescue of a couple whose Rocky Mount home caught fire on October 26, 2007; and
WHEREAS, a former United States Marine who spent eight years in the Corps, including seven months in Iraq in 2005, Yuji Hairston is no stranger to dangerous situations, and he did not hesitate to enter the house to try to help the people inside; and
WHEREAS, while in the Marine Corps, Yuji Hairston trained with the Chemical-Biological Incident Response Force, and the knowledge he gained from that experience helped him navigate his way around the smoke-filled home in Rocky Mount; and
WHEREAS, Yuji Hairston found Mary Turner in the bedroom and brought her out of the house safely; he then went around to the back of the house and helped Robert Turner get out of the basement, where the fire is thought to have started; and
WHEREAS, at great personal risk and with little regard for his own safety, Yuji Hairston did what few would have the courage to do, and his decisive response to a hazardous situation helped save the lives of two people; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Yuji Hairston, Jr., for bravely coming to the rescue of his neighbors; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Yuji Hairston, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for his quick thinking and courageous actions in an emergency situation.
