Commending Charles David Robbins.

WHEREAS, Charles David Robbins, a native of Gastonia, North Carolina, graduated from Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina, and while at Catawba College, he was recognized for his outstanding athletic ability and achievement in football, including All-Conference, All-Region, All-State, and honorable mention All-American, and after graduation, he played semi-professional football in Richmond; and

WHEREAS, after a successful coaching career at Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond, Charles David “Dave” Robbins joined the Panthers in 1978, and during his first year as coach, he led the team to claim the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) championship for the first time in 24 seasons; and

WHEREAS, under the leadership of Charles David Robbins, the Virginia Union University men's basketball team has captured 13 CIAA championships and three National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II national championships, and has reached the NCAA Division II Final Four eight times; and

WHEREAS, Charles David Robbins has been credited with molding the careers of professional basketball stars Ben Wallace, Charles Oakley, Terry Davis, and others; and

WHEREAS, on January 12, 2008, on the home court in a packed Barco-Stevens Hall, Charles David Robbins guided the championship-winning Panthers to a 100–73 victory over Saint Paul's College, propelling him to a defining moment in his illustrious coaching career as the 26th coach in NCAA basketball history in all divisions to achieve 700 career wins; and

WHEREAS, Charles David Robbins, in his 30th season as Virginia Union University’s head men’s basketball coach, was recognized by the CIAA as Coach of the Week for his accomplishment, and he has become only the fifth coach in NCAA Division II basketball history to win 700 games, ranking third all-time among active coaches in NCAA Division II basketball; and

WHEREAS, Charles David Robbins is one of two coaches to win NCAA Championships in three different decades, 1980, 1992, and 2005; and former and current players declare that Dave Robbins’ life, principles, precepts, thoughts, decisions, work, athletics, relationships, and endeavors are shaped and informed by his character; and

WHEREAS, Charles David Robbins, affectionately known by his peers as the “White Shadow,” is richly deserving of the honor and recognition afforded by this prestigious achievement; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Charles David Robbins, legendary head coach of the Virginia Union University men’s basketball team; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Charles David Robbins as an expression of the General Assembly’s pride and admiration for his remarkable record and best wishes for continued success at Virginia Union University.
