SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 195
Commending the Jeanie Schmidt Free Clinic and its volunteer medical providers and staff.

WHEREAS, the Jeanie Schmidt Free Clinic and its outstanding volunteer medical providers and staff were honored by the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce and Reston Interfaith, Inc., with a prestigious 2008 Best of Reston award; and

WHEREAS, the Best of Reston awards were established to recognize individuals, businesses, and organizations that have demonstrated a strong commitment to serving the Reston community and improving the lives of others; and

WHEREAS, the Jeanie Schmidt Free Clinic, Fairfax County’s only free clinic, was established in 2002 by retired public health nurse, Jeanie Schmidt, in order to provide access to healthcare for low-income residents; and

WHEREAS, with the help of dedicated volunteers and the support of the community, the Jeanie Schmidt Free Clinic staff began conducting school entry physicals free of charge to uninsured, low-income children, and in its first year of operation, the clinic performed 355 school physicals; and

WHEREAS, since its founding, more than 2,000 children have received important health screenings at the Jeanie Schmidt Free Clinic, and in 2007, volunteer medical staff provided quality primary medical care to patients through 751 visits; and

WHEREAS, the caring volunteer medical providers of the Jeanie Schmidt Free Clinic work together in a cooperative effort to help their fellow citizens, and the network of dedicated doctors, nurses, medical technicians, pharmacists, and medical and nursing students give freely of their time to provide quality medical services to clinic patients; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to building a healthier community, 109 volunteer medical providers gave over 1,500 hours of service in 2007, providing patient care, as well as performing administrative and fundraising activities to raise money for necessary medical supplies and equipment; and

WHEREAS, exemplary executive director Meagan Ulrich joined the Jeanie Schmidt Free Clinic in 2005, and in the same year the clinic moved out of its temporary site at the Herndon Middle School and Neighborhood Resource Center and dedicated its new facility on Grove Avenue in Herndon; and

WHEREAS, the compassionate and caring medical providers and staff of the Jeanie Schmidt Free Clinic have worked with great energy and dedication to help improve the lives of the residents of Reston; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the Jeanie Schmidt Free Clinic and its volunteer medical providers and staff on their outstanding service to the citizens of Northwestern Fairfax County and on the clinic’s well-deserved honor as a 2008 Best of Reston award recipient; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Meagan Ulrich on behalf of the Jeanie Schmidt Free Clinic as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for the clinic’s many efforts to provide quality healthcare to citizens in need in the Reston community.
