Celebrating the life of Private First Class David H. Sharrett II.

WHEREAS, United States Army Private First Class David H. Sharrett II was killed in the line of duty in Iraq on January 16, 2008; and

WHEREAS, born in Woodstock, David Sharrett grew up in Oakton and graduated from Oakton High School in 1999 where he was a star defensive end on the football team; and

WHEREAS, David Sharrett decided to enlist in the United States Army in 2006 because he wanted to serve his country, and after completing boot camp, he was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 32nd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) based in Fort Campbell, Kentucky; and

WHEREAS, Private First Class Sharrett was deployed to Iraq in September 2007 for what was to be a two-year tour of duty; he died in Pallouata, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his patrol was attacked by grenade and small-arms fire during combat operations in Balad, Iraq; and

WHEREAS, Private First Class Sharrett received many awards and decorations, including the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, and the Expert Weapons Qualification Badge; and

WHEREAS, passionate about fishing, the Redskins, and heavy-metal music, Private First Class Sharrett was also a devoted reader and lover of history; he wanted to become a history teacher after completing his military service; and

WHEREAS, Private First Class Sharrett will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his beloved wife, his parents, his two younger brothers, and many other family members, friends, and fellow soldiers; and

WHEREAS, Private First Class Sharrett’s death is a reminder of the hazards faced daily by the thousands of Americans who serve in our armed forces overseas and whose devotion to duty places them in harm’s way; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a courageous and patriotic Virginian, Private First Class David H. Sharrett II; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Private First Class David H. Sharrett II as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of the Commonwealth.
