SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 180
Celebrating the life of Jarrod Brent Shivers.

WHEREAS, Jarrod Brent Shivers, a detective with the Chesapeake Police Department, was killed in the line of duty on January 17, 2008; and

WHEREAS, a native of El Paso, Texas, Jarrod Shivers graduated from high school in West Chester, Pennsylvania, in 1992 and then served in the United States Navy for eight years; and

WHEREAS, Jarrod Shivers joined the Chesapeake Police Department in January 2000, graduating from the police academy in June that same year, and he first served as a uniformed patrol and bicycle officer; and

WHEREAS, in April 2005, Officer Shivers was promoted to detective with the department’s Special Investigations Section, which is primarily responsible for drug and vice investigations, and in September 2005, he was also assigned to the Special Weapons and Tactics Team; and

WHEREAS, during his career with the Chesapeake Police Department, Detective Shivers received a number of honors, including the Chief’s Award of Recognition, Drug Enforcement Incentive Award, four Star Performer Awards, and several letters of recognition, and in 2002, he earned a first-place Law Enforcement Officers award through the Virginia State Police’s Help Eliminate Auto Theft (H.E.A.T.) program for his efforts to combat auto theft; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated police officer and consummate family man, Detective Shivers will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by his wife Nicole; his children Brittnie, Ashleigh, and Landon; his father and his siblings; and many other family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Jarrod Brent Shivers, an outstanding law-enforcement officer; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Jarrod Brent Shivers as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
