Celebrating the life of Michael E. Shaheen, Jr.

WHEREAS, Michael E. Shaheen, Jr., of Falls Church, the founding director of the Justice Department’s Office of Professional Responsibility, died on November 29, 2007; and

WHEREAS, Michael Shaheen joined the Justice Department in 1973 in the civil rights division, and two years later Attorney General Edward H. Levi established the Office of Professional Responsibility and appointed him to direct it; and

WHEREAS, at the time of its establishment, the office was the only agency in the executive branch that could start administrative and criminal internal investigations, and Michael Shaheen conducted investigations of high-ranking Cabinet officials, senior White House employees, and more than one president; and

WHEREAS, never shying away from a challenge, Michael Shaheen investigated many well-known figures, along with examining misconduct in the ranks of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Administration, Border Patrol, Bureau of Prisons, and United States Marshals Service; and

WHEREAS, known for his persistence and his strong work ethic, Michael Shaheen received the Presidential Rank Award for Distinguished Service and two Meritorious Service Awards during his career with the Justice Department, which ended in 1997 when he left to work for the Commission on the Advancement of Federal Law Enforcement; and

WHEREAS, Michael Shaheen will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by his wife, Polly; his three sons, Michael, Timothy, and Francisco; his four half-sisters, his half-brother, his three grandchildren; and many other family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of Michael E. Shaheen, Jr., an outstanding public servant and a fine Virginian; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Michael E. Shaheen, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
