Commending the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center.

WHEREAS, the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center at the University of Virginia will provide comprehensive care and education for cancer patients in a nurturing, supportive environment as well as be home to cutting-edge research and clinical trials that may help develop new therapies; and

WHEREAS, named for the former Virginia state senator who died of pancreatic cancer in 2001 and was a strong advocate for cancer care and research, the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center will put patients and families first, allowing them to receive the most advanced services in comfortable surroundings; and

WHEREAS, the five-story, eco-friendly building, the construction of which is scheduled for completion in 2010, will bring together under one roof diagnostic and treatment services, patient/family amenities, clinical trial laboratories, and outreach offices, all of which will be in close proximity to the University Hospital; and

WHEREAS, the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center will house all outpatient services for adults diagnosed with cancer, including comprehensive services for patient-centered care such as infusion, physician consultations, imaging, hematology and oncology clinics; complete radiation-oncology treatment services, including state-of-the-art tomotherapy; a clinical trials office, ensuring that advanced or experimental therapies are available to every patient; complete patient and family services, including a cancer learning center and programs to foster physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being; clusters of exam and consultation rooms that maintain privacy as well as access to complete clinical information on each patient; and telemedicine capabilities for offering expert consultation and outreach across the region; and

WHEREAS, the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center will accommodate advances in such areas as genetic diagnosis and analysis, informatics, and molecular biology and will be organized so that all disciplines and services can easily be brought to the patient to provide individualized care that is both sophisticated and tightly integrated; and

WHEREAS, the goal of the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center is to create a seamless system of clinical care, education, and outreach that respects the whole patient and inspires the team of physicians, nurses, researchers, and caregivers who are shaping the future of cancer care in the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center for its vision of offering comprehensive, state-of-the-art cancer care and research; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for its commitment to the health and well-being of the citizens of the Commonwealth.
