Commending Jane Harrel Garrant Roane.

WHEREAS, Jane Harrel Garrant Roane is an upstanding citizen and longtime resident of Richmond’s Church Hill neighborhood; and

WHEREAS, born in Fluvanna County on February 12, 1908, Jane Garrant celebrates her 100th birthday in 2008; she was the daughter of George Washington and Laura Adams Garrant and had 10 brothers and sisters; and

WHEREAS, Jane Garrant was raised on T. D. Stokes Farm (Elk Hill) in Goochland, where she worked every day at the house, with one Sunday off per month; and

WHEREAS, a curious and hardworking child, Jane Garrant attended Backbone School until the sixth grade; she and her family were faithful members of Second Union Church, and she was baptized at age 11 in the James River; and

WHEREAS, Jane Garrant obtained her first employment at the age of 15, working for three years in the home of Louise Buhrman in Cartersville before deciding to accept employment in Bronxville, New York; after 18 months in New York, she returned to the Buhrmans for two more years; and

WHEREAS, wanting to be closer to her siblings, Jane Garrant took a job with Mrs. John Hagan on East Franklin Street in Richmond, and she was employed there for 30 years as a homemaker and confidant; and

WHEREAS, after her many years in the employment of Mrs. John Hagan, Jane Roane went to work in the nurses’ quarters at the Medical College of Virginia, and she retired from that position after 25 years of service; and

WHEREAS, Jane Garrant married Mr. George Roane on October 28, 1945, and they shared 52 beautiful years together and had a daughter, the late Mattie Roane Hale, and one grandson, Anthony Hale; and

WHEREAS, a kind and devoted friend, neighbor, aunt, and grandmother, Jane Roane loves to crochet and to recall the many things she has observed and experienced in her long and rich life; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate Jane Harrel Garrant Roane on the occasion of her 100th birthday; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jane Harrel Garrant Roane as an expression of the General Assembly’s best wishes for continued success.
