SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 152
Commending Steven R. Staples.

WHEREAS, Steven R. Staples, Ed.D., the superintendent of York County Schools, will retire at the end of the 2007–2008 school year after 17 years of outstanding service to the citizens of York County and the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Steven Staples earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in education from The College of William and Mary and a doctor of education degree in administration and supervision from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Staples began his distinguished career in education as a classroom teacher at L.L. Beazley Elementary School and J.E.J. Moore Junior High School and then went on to teach and serve as a department chair at Prince George High School; and

WHEREAS, before joining the York County Schools, Dr. Staples served as assistant principal at Prince George High School and principal at Hopewell High School and was appointed as assistant superintendent for instruction for the Montgomery County Public Schools; and

WHEREAS, a knowledgeable administrator with vast experience, Dr. Steven Staples has served as superintendent of York County Schools since 1991; and

WHEREAS, during his tenure, Dr. Staples was instrumental in the development of two elementary magnet schools, a middle school arts magnet school, and the York River Academy charter school; the establishment of a virtual high school program and the International Baccalaureate program at York High School; and the building, expansion, and renovation of excellent schools throughout York County; and

WHEREAS, receiving countless awards and accolades over the years, Dr. Steven Staples was honored as Virginia’s Superintendent of the Year in 1997, the American Heart Association National Youth Marketing Administrator of the Year for 2006–2007, and the William and Mary Kappa Delta Pi Distinguished Educator in 2001, and he received the University Council for Educational Administration’s Excellence in Educational Leadership Award in 2002; and

WHEREAS, always at the forefront of educational issues and sensitive to the concerns of York County parents, students, and his fellow educators, Dr. Steven Staples has served as the superintendent of York County Schools with integrity, compassion, and exceptional skill; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Steven R. Staples on his 17 years of visionary leadership as York County Schools superintendent; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Steven R. Staples as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for his many achievements and best wishes for success in all of his future endeavors.
