SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 150
Commending Timothy Cocrane.

WHEREAS, Timothy Cocrane, an Oakton High School graduate and a student at Longwood University, is recognized for his extreme courage and diligence in the rescue of three residents from a devastating house fire in Farmville; and

WHEREAS, praised for his selfless actions and quick thinking, Timothy Cocrane spotted smoke and fire coming out of the door of his friend’s house at about six o’clock Saturday morning, March 3, 2007; he kicked in the front door and began to search for anyone he could find; and

WHEREAS, immediately realizing the danger of the situation, Timothy Cocrane ran up the stairs, yelling for everyone to get out; he was in the “right place at the right time, God put me there to save those guys’ lives,” he adamantly believes, and much to his relief, three victims did manage to escape by jumping out of a second story window; and

WHEREAS, determined to save his friends, Tim Cocrane, aged 21, sustained major burns and injuries in the brave rescue, but he is doing well and expected to make a complete recovery; and

WHEREAS, Timothy Cocrane, a mathematics major, was heralded a hero by citizens of the community, and the president of Longwood University presented the outstanding young man with a university scholarship to cover his tuition in recognition of his courage; and

WHEREAS, sadly, two people died in the tragic fire despite Timothy Cocrane’s valiant efforts, but there is no doubt that he is a hero and that he did everything within his power to save lives, and those that he did warn were fortunately spared because of his bravery; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Timothy Cocrane for his courage and persistence in the successful rescue of three of his fellow citizens; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Timothy Cocrane as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for his commendable actions.
