SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 148
Celebrating the life of William B. Muse, Jr.

WHEREAS, William B. Muse, Jr., of Martinsville, a respected business and community leader, died on February 26, 2007; and

WHEREAS, born in Danville in 1918 to the late William B. Muse, Sr., and Maude Smith Muse, William Muse was a resident of Martinsville/Henry County for 66 years; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Westmoreland High School in Danville, William Muse attended Hampton Institute (now Hampton University) and served in the United States Army in World War II before settling in Martinsville and establishing himself as a talented and successful businessman; and

WHEREAS, during his career, William Muse founded Williams and Muse Real Estate & Insurance Brokerage and was co-owner of and land developer for Wray Park Corporation; and

WHEREAS, William Muse played an active role in the growth and development of his community; he was a charter member of Imperial Savings and Loan and served on the board of directors, and as secretary, of First State Bank in Danville; and

WHEREAS, William Muse dedicated much time and energy to professional and civic organizations, serving as chairman of the American League of Financial Institutions; vice president of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB); president of the Virginia Chapter of NAREB; chairman of the Martinsville/Henry County Voters’ League; chairman of the Men’s Roundtable Club; and as a member of the Martinsville/Henry County Chapter of the NAACP, the Virginia Civil Rights Commission, and the board of trustees of St. Paul’s College; and

WHEREAS, a devout member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, William Muse supported the church’s many programs and missions and served as a member of the board of trustees, head of the vestry, and a lay reader; and

WHEREAS, preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Kent Muse, William Muse will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his sons, Michael and Eric Muse; his two sisters, Frankie Muse Freeman and Allie Muse Peebles; his three grandchildren; and many other family members and dear friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a dedicated community leader and a fine Virginian, William B. Muse, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of William B. Muse, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
