WHEREAS, the Virginia Tech Hokies won the 2007 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) football championship on December 1, 2007, by defeating Boston College, 30 - 16; and
WHEREAS, the win was especially sweet because the Hokies came into the championship game with only one blemish on their conference record, a 14 - 10 regular season loss to the Boston College Eagles in October; and
WHEREAS, the Hokies had their work cut out for them early on, as the Eagles jumped out to a 10 - 0 lead, but the Hokies responded halfway through the second quarter, scoring on a five-yard touchdown pass from Sean Glennon to Josh Morgan; and
WHEREAS, the Eagles scored again a few minutes later with a touchdown run by their quarterback, but the extra point was blocked and then caught by Hokies’ cornerback Brandon Flowers, who returned it 75 yards for a defensive two-point conversion; and
WHEREAS, as the first half was winding down, the Hokies struck again, scoring on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Sean Glennon to Josh Hyman that tied the ball game as both teams headed to the locker room; and
WHEREAS, Virginia Tech shut out Boston College in the second half while scoring two more touchdowns, one off another Sean Glennon pass and the other after Xavier Adibi returned an interception 40 yards; and
WHEREAS, Virginia Tech quarterback Sean Glennon finished the game with 18 successful passes out of 27 attempts, leading to three touchdowns and a total of 174 yards, and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player; and
WHEREAS, the triumphant performance of the Hokies in the 2007 ACC championship game is a tribute to the talent, commitment, and perseverance of the players; the leadership of Head Coach Frank Beamer and his staff; and the support of the students, alumni, and fans of the Virginia Tech Hokies; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the Virginia Tech football team on its outstanding 2007 season and resounding win in the ACC title game; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Frank Beamer as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the championship performance of the Virginia Tech Hokies football team.
