WHEREAS, Joey Goodrich of Pearisburg is recognized for his dedication to the Special Olympics and the sport of track and field and his outstanding performance in Shanghai, China, in the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games, which were held from October 2 – 11, 2007, and attended by 7,500 athletes from 160 countries around the world; and

WHEREAS, before an enthusiastic crowd at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in China, Joey Goodrich won a silver medal in the 100-meter dash, a silver medal in the shot-put, as well as a silver medal as a member of the 4 x 100 meter relay team; and

WHEREAS, after graduating from high school, Joey Goodrich has taken art classes at YMCA Virginia Tech’s Open University and is a three-time winner of community art contests; and

WHEREAS, enjoying a multitude of interests and hobbies, Joey Goodrich spends his leisure time practicing martial arts, playing video games, building with Legos, listening to black metal music, swimming, camping, and going to the movies; and

WHEREAS, a talented track and field athlete and a shining ambassador for the United States, the Commonwealth, and his hometown of Pearisburg, Joey Goodrich is outgoing, an exemplar of good sportsmanship, and an excellent role model for his fellow athletes; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Joey Goodrich on his outstanding Special Olympics track and field career and his inspirational performance in Shanghai, China, in the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Joey Goodrich as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation of his commitment to the Special Olympics, his fellow athletes, and the sport of track and field.
