2008 SESSION
WHEREAS, the Town of Kenbridge and its citizens will celebrate its historic 100th anniversary in 2008; and
WHEREAS, incorporated as a town on March 14, 1908, the Town of Kenbridge began as a vital crossroad in rural Lunenburg County; and
WHEREAS, formerly known as Tinkling, the Town of Kenbridge was named after its location on the site of the farms of the Kennedy and Bridgforth families; and
WHEREAS, within two years of its founding, the industrious citizens of Kenbridge had established many shops and businesses, including two hardware stores, a general store, a community bank, a real estate office, an automotive garage, and a popular local inn all along Broad Street, the town’s center of activity and progress; and
WHEREAS, the enterprising spirit of the townspeople was also shared by the innovative farmers of Lunenburg County, who raised some of the finest tobacco grown in Virginia; and
WHEREAS, the Town of Kenbridge has been led by many outstanding local leaders and represented by many distinguished members in the General Assembly over the last century; and
WHEREAS, the citizens of Kenbridge are served by well-trained and dedicated members of its volunteer fire department and rescue squad, sheriff’s office, town council, and administrative offices and staff; and
WHEREAS, today, new businesses and industry can make a home in Kenbridge because of the availability of raw material, the ease of transporting products, and the tremendous support of local leaders, businesses, and residents; and
WHEREAS, the Town of Kenbridge continues to grow and prosper because of the patriotism, hard work, strong family values, and the immense sense of community pride of all of its citizens; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Town of Kenbridge on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Richard W. Harris, Mayor of Kenbridge, as an expression of the General Assembly’s recognition of this important milestone in the town’s history and best wishes for a memorable centennial celebration.
