2008 SESSION
088676256WHEREAS, the 2007 Hampton High School girls’ basketball team capped an outstanding season by winning the Virginia High School League AAA state title on March 10, 2007, at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center in Richmond; and
WHEREAS, the Hampton High School Crabbers defeated the Edison High School Eagles, in the final seconds in a thrilling game by a score of 46 - 45; and
WHEREAS, the talented Hampton High School girls’ basketball team won its second state title in six years, the last one being claimed by the 2001 Crabbers; and
WHEREAS, the dedicated and hard-working Crabbers’ final season record of 30 – 2 was the best in school history for girls’ basketball; and
WHEREAS, sophomore Alyssa Bennett led the Crabbers with 13 points in the final game and seniors Raychele Payne, Kelley London, Sagan Jackson, and Evelyn Lewis, as well as sophomores Tiffany Davis, Talaya Lynch, and Joycelyn Davis made tremendous contributions, as did all of the Crabbers in a great team effort throughout the regular and postseason; and
WHEREAS, the Crabbers defensive players dominated teams all season long, allowing only one opponent this season to top 50 points; and in the state tournament, the exceptional defense handcuffed both Northern Region teams, limiting Oakton High School to 28 percent shooting in the semifinals and Edison High School to 29 percent in the final; and
WHEREAS, with a mere 2.8 seconds left in a heart-stopping finish, Hampton guard Raychele Payne jump-stopped in the lane and made a 10-foot jumper over an Edison junior forward’s outstretched arm to clinch a 46 - 45 victory for the Crabbers; and
WHEREAS, the triumphant performance of the 2007 Crabbers is a tribute to the skill, dedication, and perseverance of the players; the leadership of Head Coach David Six and his staff; and the support of the students, faculty, and parents of Hampton High School; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the 2007 Crabbers from Hampton High School on their outstanding 2007 season and Group AAA girls’ basketball state championship; and, be it
