Celebrating the life of Allan McClain.

WHEREAS, Allan McClain, a respected citizen and outstanding former mayor of the City of Martinsville, died on September 6, 2007; and

WHEREAS, Allan McClain was born on April 28, 1942, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and was the only child of the late James and Dorothy Beegle McClain; and

WHEREAS, Allan McClain graduated from Princeton University summa cum laude in 1963 with a degree in English literature with a concentration in humanities and served his country from 1963 to 1967 in the United States Navy in Vietnam aboard the USS Fletcher DD-445; and

WHEREAS, after his discharge as a lieutenant, Allan McClain attended the University of Pittsburgh Law School and received a law degree summa cum laude in 1970; and

WHEREAS, Allan McClain clerked for a justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania and practiced law for the firm of Kirkpatrick, Lockhart, Johnson and Hutcheson before moving to Martinsville in 1972; and

WHEREAS, Allan McClain served as the assistant secretary of Southwestern Virginia Gas Company and its affiliates, was promoted to vice president-operations and manager in 1974, and was elected executive vice president in 1978 and president and chief executive officer in 1979; and

WHEREAS, Allan McClain served as the head of Southwestern Virginia Gas for 24 years until his retirement on March 28, 2003, when he was elected chairman of the board of the company; and

WHEREAS, over the years, Allan McClain gave his time and many talents to numerous civic and professional organizations, including as president of the United Fund, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Virginia Propane Gas Association, and as a trustee of Carlisle School; and

WHEREAS, in May 1986, Allan McClain was elected to a four-year term on the City Council of Martinsville, and during his second term was elected mayor, a position he held with distinction for four years; and

WHEREAS, in 2001, Allan McClain was appointed a director of the Virginia Propane Gas Association for a two-year term and received its President’s Award in 2006; and

WHEREAS, a hardworking and dedicated community benefactor, Allan McClain will be remembered for his exemplary leadership and greatly missed by his devoted wife, Charlotte Williams McClain; his son and daughter-in-law, James II and Anna McClain; his many other loving family members and friends; and the citizens of the City of Martinsville; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the passing of a fine public servant and outstanding Virginian, Allan McClain; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Allan McClain as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
