2008 SESSION
089352606WHEREAS, Georgina Marraccini Rawles of Richmond, a respected citizen and devoted community supporter, died on February 27, 2008; and
WHEREAS, born in Turkey in 1918 to a family of British colonial expatriates, Georgina Rawles grew up in Tunis, Rome, Athens, and Geneva, and she earned a degree in political science at the University of Geneva; and
WHEREAS, because of the outbreak of World War II, Georgina Rawles was sent at age 20 to live with an aunt and uncle in Richmond; during the war, she served as the first female huntsman for the Deep Run Hunt Club; and
WHEREAS, a committed philanthropist, Georgina Rawles supported numerous arts and community organizations, including the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, where she was active on the Council and a particular supporter of South Asian art; the Maymont Foundation, from which she received the Benevolent Society Award in 2005; the Salvation Army, serving as Christmas Mother in 1986; St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where she served as a cochair for Lenten Lunches; the American Red Cross; the Richmond Symphony; and the Virginia Opera; and
WHEREAS, Georgina Rawles also served on the board of the Edgar Allan Poe Museum, the Richmond Ballet, Planned Parenthood, and the James Monroe Foundation, from which she received the James Monroe Distinguished Public Service Award in 2003; and
WHEREAS, Georgina Rawles was a member of the James River Garden Club, the Deep Run Hunt Club, the Woman's Club, the Country Club of Virginia, and St. Paul's Episcopal Church; and
WHEREAS, preceded in death by her husband, James White Rawles, Georgina Rawles will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her five children, Archbell, James, Elizabeth, Georgina, and Benjamin; her 15 grandchildren; and many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of an exceptional philanthropist and community leader, Georgina Marraccini Rawles; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Georgina Marraccini Rawles as an expression of the House of Delegates’ respect for her memory.
