WHEREAS, Lois Vivian Johnson, Senior Committee Clerk in the House Committee Operations Office, retired on September 19, 2007, thus ending an outstanding career of service to the House of Delegates; and

WHEREAS, a native of Tennessee, Lois Johnson graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School in Kingsport, Tennessee, in 1949 at the tender age of 16; and

WHEREAS, Lois Johnson subsequently attended East Tennessee State University, graduating in 1953 at the age of 20 with a bachelor of science degree in Business Administration and a Permanent Tennessee Professional Teacher’s License; and

WHEREAS during her years at East Tennessee State University, Lois Johnson distinguished herself inside and outside the classroom through her service as secretary of the student body, president of the Sigma Theta Kappa Sorority, and president of the Business Education Fraternity; and

WHEREAS, in her younger days, Lois Johnson was very involved in tennis and indoor badminton, winning more than 30 trophies in badminton, including one from a tournament in Dallas where she and her partner won the mixed doubles badminton championship against the reigning United States champions; and

WHEREAS, in 1953 Lois Johnson began 35 years of distinguished service to the Eastman Kodak Company, including Tennessee Eastman Company and Eastman Chemical Products, Inc., in Kingsport, Tennessee, Houston, Texas, and Los Angeles, California, before retiring on August 1, 1988; and

WHEREAS, Lois Johnson began her work for the House of Delegates in the Information Office in January 1989; and 

WHEREAS, Lois Johnson subsequently moved to the Committee Operations office for the 1990 Session, where she remained a steady and reliable presence until her retirement in September 2007; and

WHEREAS during her lengthy stay as committee clerk, Lois Johnson provided outstanding service and support to the members of the House Committee on General Laws, the House Committee on Counties, Cities and Towns, and the House Committee on Mining and Mineral Resources, but most especially to her committee chairs Alson H. Smith, Jr., Mary Marshall, Alan A. Diamonstein, S. Vance Wilkins, Jr., and John S. “Jack” Reid; and

WHEREAS, during her sterling career, Lois Johnson was promoted to senior committee clerk and provided unsurpassed year-round support to the members of the General Assembly; and

WHEREAS, Lois Johnson served under House Clerks Joseph H. Holleman, Jr., and Bruce F. Jamerson and under Speakers A. L. Philpott, Thomas W. Moss, Jr., S. Vance Wilkins, Jr., and William J. Howell; and

WHEREAS, throughout her 19 years of service to the House of Delegates, Lois Johnson established an enviable record of achievement, characterized by her efficiency and effectiveness, her devotion to duty and her family, her professionalism, and her love for and dedication to the members of the House of Delegates; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Lois Vivian Johnson be hereby commended on her meritorious service to the House of Delegates, the General Assembly, and the citizens of the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Lois Vivian Johnson as an expression of the House of Delegates’ gratitude for her contributions to Virginia and best wishes for a long and fulfilling retirement.
