084408676WHEREAS, United States Marine Corps Lance Corporal Jeremy L. Tinnel, aged 20, died in the line of duty on July 1, 2007, while serving his country in Iraq; and
WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Jeremy L. Tinnel, a Richmond native, was killed in a boating accident on the Euphrates River off the shore of Anbar Province; and
WHEREAS, Jeremy L. Tinnel grew up in Highland Springs and Sandston, attended home-school, and lived in Mechanicsville before joining the United States Marine Corps in August 2004; and
WHEREAS, while stationed in North Carolina, Jeremy Tinnel met the love of his life, Angel Nichole Mergler, and the couple married in a small ceremony in Mechanicsville and moved to her hometown of Havre de Grace, Maryland; and
WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Tinnel honorably served his country as an infantryman with the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, II Marine Expeditionary Force based at Camp Lejeune, a unit that was deployed to Iraq to help quell sectarian violence in towns along the Euphrates River; and
WHEREAS, serving his second tour of duty in Iraq, Lance Corporal Tinnel previously experienced a close encounter with insurgents during a routine patrol in May 2007, when his Humvee was severely damaged by an improvised explosive device during a roadside attack; and
WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Tinnel was a Civil War enthusiast and outdoorsman, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, four-wheeling, and listening to country music; and
WHEREAS, on a Sunday during furlough in 2006, Lance Corporal Tinnel, in full dress uniform, patiently answered questions and visited with the children of New Bridge Baptist Church in Sandston; and
WHEREAS, a young patriot who felt strongly that it was his duty to serve his country, Lance Corporal Tinnel was dedicated to his community and devoted to his wife, his beloved parents and siblings, and his fellow Marines; and
WHEREAS, Lance Corporal Jeremy L. Tinnel's death is a reminder of the perils faced daily by the thousands of Americans who serve in our armed forces overseas and whose devotion to duty places them in harm's way; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a courageous and patriotic Virginian, Lance Corporal Jeremy L. Tinnel; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Lance Corporal Jeremy L. Tinnel as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of the Commonwealth.
