HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 609 Celebrating the life of Robert Lawrence McGinnis.

WHEREAS, Robert Lawrence McGinnis of Danville, a community supporter and celebrated former South Boston Speedway race car champion, died on January 25, 2008; and

WHEREAS, Robert “Bob” McGinnis was born in Lincolnton, North Carolina, on August 14, 1929, the son of the late H. Lawrence and Jewel Justice McGinnis; and

WHEREAS, a resident of Danville for most of his life, Bob McGinnis was a self-employed mechanic who loved racing and race cars; and

WHEREAS, Bob McGinnis began his racing career in the 1940s on dirt racetracks at the Danville Fairgrounds, and he later moved on to compete in races at South Boston Speedway; and

WHEREAS, in 1965 Bob McGinnis was the modified division’s cochampion, sharing the honor with Sonny Hutchins; and

WHEREAS, an enthusiastic promoter of dirt track racing, Bob McGinnis was a devoted member of the Virginia-Carolina Early Dirt Track Racer’s Club and the Old Timer’s Racing Club; and

WHEREAS, Bob McGinnis drove one of his first sponsored cars for Claude Moore and went on to drive Howard Cook’s red, white, and blue No. 1 car and Frank Edwards’ black and gold No. 98 car; and

WHEREAS, over the course of his exciting racing career, Bob McGinnis won many fans and provided numerous thrills at Danville’s local racetracks; and

WHEREAS, Bob McGinnis will be fondly remembered by his wife Peggy McGinnis; his daughters, Debra Jonas, Robin Wright, and Janet Powell, and their wonderful families, including six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and his numerous friends, admirers, and fans of racing; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the passing of a fine Virginian, Robert Lawrence McGinnis; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Robert Lawrence McGinnis as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
