HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 607
Celebrating the life of William Isaac Lee Sydnor.

WHEREAS, William Isaac Lee Sydnor of Danville, an admired citizen and outstanding community supporter, died on December 19, 2007; and

WHEREAS, William Sydnor was born in Pittsylvania County on January 11, 1918, the son of the late Matthew Clay and Queen Victoria Coleman Sydnor and loving brother of 10 siblings; and

WHEREAS, in 1939 William Sydnor married Sarah M. Woods, and the couple shared a wonderful marriage together for 67 years and had six children, two of whom preceded him in death; and

WHEREAS, with no more than a seventh-grade education, William Sydnor gained wisdom from reading extensively and living life, and he became a role model and cherished mentor for his family members, friends, and members of his community; and

WHEREAS, involved in the church since the age of 11, William Sydnor was a faithful member of Sandy Creek Baptist Church, where over the years he was called to an increasingly greater ministry, serving as superintendent of the Sunday School, manager of the senior choir, and chairman of the music department; and

WHEREAS, in 1956 William Sydnor became an ordained deacon, faithfully serving for 51 years as a member of the Deacon’s Union and a member of the Danville Vicinity Committee that visited members who were sick or in need; he became chair of the Deacon’s Board in 1961 and chair of the Trustee Board in 1966, serving for four decades with skill and compassion for others; and

WHEREAS, an inspiration to all who knew him well, William Sydnor will be fondly remembered for his kind and generous nature and will be greatly missed by his four children, J. Carol, William, Gloria, and Ronnie and their families, especially his wonderful grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his two brothers, Joseph and Matthew, three sisters, Elnora, Nellie, and Gladys, and two stepsisters, Beatrice and Marcella; and a host of other relatives and dear friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding Virginian, William Isaac Lee Sydnor; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of William Isaac Lee Sydnor as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
