Celebrating the life of Joan Frances Weber Gignac.

WHEREAS, Joan Frances Weber Gignac of Danville, a respected businesswoman and community supporter, died on January 11, 2008; and

WHEREAS, Joan Gignac was born on July 25, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of the late Edward C. and Helen Polaszewski Weber, and she moved to Danville in 1974; and

WHEREAS, Joan Gignac stayed home to raise her family, and along with her husband, she formed Engineering Design and Sales, Inc., a Danville manufacturing company in 1976; and

WHEREAS, because of her large and wonderful family, Joan Gignac was devoted to the well-being of children, and she was a major benefactor to Duke Children's Hospital and supported scholarships for young people of low income who attended Danville Community College, Averett University, and Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, Illinois; and

WHEREAS, Joan Gignac and her husband also endowed the chair of the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Department at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee; and

WHEREAS, devoted to her community of Danville, Joan Gignac was a great supporter of civic organizations and activities, and she was a founding member and copresident of the North Theatre, Inc., board of directors; and

WHEREAS, a lifelong member of the Catholic faith, Joan Gignac was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Danville and served in many positions in church organizations and outreach programs in the community; and

WHEREAS, Joan Gignac will be fondly remembered for her kind and generous nature and will be greatly missed by her husband of 56 years, Roy G. Gignac; her daughters Carol Ann, Constance, Joanne, and Mary Jo, and her sons Mark, Paul, Thomas, and Roy and their wonderful families, especially her 27 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; numerous other relatives and friends; and the parishioners of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Danville; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the passing of a fine community supporter and outstanding Virginian, Joan Frances Weber Gignac; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Joan Frances Weber Gignac as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
