089242440WHEREAS, John McWethy, former chief national security correspondent for ABC News and a former resident of Arlington County, died on February 6, 2008; and
WHEREAS, the son of a journalist, John McWethy began his career at Congressional Quarterly, moved to U.S. News & World Report in 1973, where he became the magazine's chief White House correspondent in 1977, and then joined ABC News in 1979 as chief Pentagon correspondent, covering the Iran hostage crisis and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan; and
WHEREAS, John McWethy became chief national security correspondent for ABC News in 1984, providing daily coverage of U.S. foreign policy from military and diplomatic perspectives for World News Tonight with Peter Jennings as well as Good Morning America, Nightline, and other ABC News broadcasts; and
WHEREAS, well-respected by the military and diplomatic officials he covered and by his colleagues, John McWethy was known to be level-headed in tense situations and extremely well-prepared; during his career he received five national Emmy Awards, an Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia Award, an Overseas Press Club Award, and other honors; and
WHEREAS, John McWethy had intended to retire from daily reporting in 2001, but the events of September 11 changed his plans; he was in the Pentagon when it was struck that day and for the next several months he provided daily coverage of the war on terror, ultimately postponing his retirement until 2003; and
WHEREAS, John McWethy will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 36 years, Laurie; their sons, Adam and Ian; and countless other family members, colleagues and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of John McWethy, an outstanding journalist and a fine Virginian; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of John McWethy as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
