WHEREAS, John C. Hamlin, respected citizen and longtime member of the Danville City Council and mayor for two terms, will retire in 2008 after 22 years of outstanding service to his community; and

WHEREAS, a native of Danville, John Hamlin was born on November 4, 1946, the son of John and Lois Hamlin, and he earned a bachelor’s degree from Randolph-Macon College in 1970; and

WHEREAS, John Hamlin was employed as the general manager of Barker-Hamlin Tire Company from 1970 to 1975, as classified ad manager for Register Publishing Company from 1976 to 1980, and as operations manager for Danville Distributing Company since 1980; and

WHEREAS, committed to improving the quality of life for his fellow residents, John Hamlin was appointed to the Danville City Council on September 17, 1986, filling a council member’s unexpired term; and

WHEREAS, John Hamlin was elected to four terms as a council member and served as an outstanding and hardworking mayor for two two-year terms; and

WHEREAS, John Hamlin has received numerous awards and accolades over the years for his exemplary service to his community, including the Rotary Paul Harris Fellows Award, the Averett College Outstanding Service Award, the Project Discovery’s Michael Hutchins Award, and the Virginia Recreation and Park’s Volunteer Service Award; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to the growth and prosperity of the City of Danville, John Hamlin has served as treasurer and board member of the Retail Merchants Association of Danville, as president and member of the Danville Area Chamber of Commerce, and as a member of the board of the Virginia Beer Wholesalers; and

WHEREAS, John Hamlin has been a tireless supporter of the community and an active member of numerous civic organizations that are vital partners of Danville, including as a member and president of the Virginia Municipal League and as a member of the Danville Metropolitan Planning Commission, the Redevelopment and Housing Authority Board, and the Danville Development Council; and

WHEREAS, looking forward to retirement, John Hamlin will enjoy spending quality time with his devoted wife, Rebecca Toler Hamlin, and their daughter Jill; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend John C. Hamlin on his 22 years of outstanding leadership as a member of the Danville City Council; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to John C. Hamlin as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for his many achievements and best wishes for a happy and rewarding retirement.
