WHEREAS, Maynard Reynolds served as a member of the Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors for 34 years, completing his term of service as a member of the Board on December 31, 2007; and

WHEREAS, Maynard Reynolds began his career in public service as a member of the Glasgow Town Council, serving from 1958 to 1964; and

WHEREAS, first appointed to fill a vacancy as representative to the Natural Bridge district in 1973, Maynard Reynolds was elected to fill the position in November 1974 in a special election; and

WHEREAS, the citizens of Natural Bridge district reelected Maynard Reynolds to eight consecutive four-year terms from 1975 to 2003, and his colleagues on the Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors frequently elected him to serve as the chairman; and

WHEREAS, Maynard Reynolds worked tirelessly on behalf of his constituents to enhance economic opportunities in Rockbridge County; and

WHEREAS, Rockbridge County employers, including Burlington Industries and the Natural Bridge of Virginia, consistently counted on Maynard Reynolds for business advice and legislative support; and

WHEREAS, Maynard Reynolds’ business experience was honed during a 35-year career as proprietor of a service station located in Glasgow and as the owner of Reynolds Oil Company; his knowledge of both business principles and the Rockbridge County area proved beneficial to both employers and local residents during his tenure on the Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors; and

WHEREAS, Maynard Reynolds championed many beneficial projects while a member of the Board of Supervisors, including the establishment of an industrial park located in Natural Bridge Station, and as a strong advocate for educational programs, he supported a $6 million renovation and expansion of Natural Bridge Elementary School and a $1 million construction program for the Glasgow Public Library; and

WHEREAS, Maynard Reynolds promoted funding for a new gymnasium at Natural Bridge High School, which benefited students living in southern Rockbridge County; and

WHEREAS, to further enhance the quality of life for residents in the Natural Bridge district, Maynard Reynolds obtained public water service for Arnolds Valley, public water and sewer service in Natural Bridge, and a $3 million project in the Buck Hill neighborhood for public water service and housing rehabilitation programs; and

WHEREAS, Maynard Reynolds also served on various regional boards and commissions including the Rockbridge Regional Jail Commission; and

WHEREAS, Maynard Reynolds honorably served his country as a soldier in the United States Army during the Korean conflict, and as a veteran, he consistently honored the service of his fellow veterans and, as a tangible expression of esteem, promoted the construction of a Veterans Memorial on Courthouse Square in Lexington; and

WHEREAS, Maynard Reynolds married his wife, Virginia, and together they raised a family including daughter, Janice Updike and son, Kelly Reynolds; and

WHEREAS, Maynard Reynolds' commitment to serving the community as a member of the Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors required countless hours of work and study during which his family supported and encouraged him; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Maynard Reynolds for his dedication and honorable service to his Natural Bridge district constituents and the citizens of Rockbridge County; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Maynard Reynolds as an expression of the General Assembly’s recognition of his long and venerable service during his 34-year tenure as a member of the Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors.
