HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 572
Commending the Reverend Dr. Marjorie Leeper Booker.

WHEREAS, the Reverend Dr. Marjorie Leeper Booker, a beloved pastor and religious pioneer, has retired after 31 years of providing inspiration and guidance throughout Richmond and the surrounding communities; and

WHEREAS, Marjorie Booker received her bachelor's degree in religious studies from Virginia Commonwealth University, a master of divinity degree from the School of Theology at Virginia Union University, and later received her honorary doctorate from the Higher Learning Bible Seminary in 2004; and

WHEREAS, Marjorie Booker served as pastor of St. John Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Petersburg for two years and was appointed to the Koinonia Christian Church in Richmond, where she served until her retirement; and

WHEREAS, Marjorie Booker has been an active member and leader in many religious and civic organizations, including the Richmond Committee of Ecumenical Clergy; Southside Ministerial Alliance; Virginia Women in Ministry; Bread of Life seminar; Hull Street/Midlothian Civic Organization; Elizabeth Harris Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star of Virginia, Prince Hall Affiliation; the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People; and the Upsilon Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority; and

WHEREAS, Marjorie Booker has also served the City of Richmond as a member of the Mayor's Committee for the Concerns of Women and the Youth Services Commission, where she focused on voter registration and get-out-the-vote efforts; and

WHEREAS, for her contributions to the communities she serves, Marjorie Booker was recognized as a "spiritual mother of the village" by the Rhythm of Africa in 1995 and was honored by the Metropolitan Business and Professional Women for her outstanding community service and outreach ministry that same year; and

WHEREAS, Marjorie Booker has been happily married for over 60 years to the Reverend Dr. William U. Booker and is the proud mother of three children and a devoted grandmother of eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Reverend Dr. Marjorie Leeper Booker for her faithful dedication and community service; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Reverend Dr. Marjorie Leeper Booker as an expression of the General Assembly's gratitude for her outstanding and loyal contributions to the citizens of the Commonwealth.
