Commending Jake Mayes.

WHEREAS, Jake Mayes of Vienna was honored with the 2008 Kids to Kids National Service Award by the Child Welfare League of America; and

WHEREAS, Jake Mayes, a 17-year-old Boy Scout, was recognized for his exceptional work with young people in Fairfax County’s foster care and adoption program; and

WHEREAS, in the fall of 2007, Jake Mayes led his fellow Scouts in Troop 13 to organize a community service project to introduce scouting to a group of older children in foster care who are hoping to be placed in adoptive homes; and

WHEREAS, the day-long event involved activities ranging from pitching tents to first aid techniques to outdoor cooking to finding your way out of the woods, and while the lessons were serious, there was plenty of laughter and camaraderie to go around; and

WHEREAS, in addition to organizing the day of scouting activities, Jake Mayes has participated in other activities for young people in the county’s foster care and adoption program, including a chess tournament and a basketball camp, and he has had a positive impact on the young people with whom he interacts; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate Jake Mayes on receiving the 2008 Kids to Kids National Service Award; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Jake Mayes as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration for his commitment to working with young people facing challenging circumstances and introducing them to new activities and experiences.
