HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 539
Commending Allan C. Burke.

WHEREAS, Allan C. Burke has devoted almost four decades to public service, first as a law-enforcement officer and then as a circuit court clerk; and

WHEREAS, a graduate of Christiansburg High School, Allan Burke worked as a deputy sheriff for Montgomery County before joining the Virginia State Police in 1972; and

WHEREAS, during his 20-year career with the Virginia State Police, Allan Burke distinguished himself as a road trooper, narcotics agent, and fixed wing and helicopter pilot; and

WHEREAS, Allan Burke once received the American Red Cross’ highest award, the Certificate of Merit Award, with a commendation letter from President Ronald Reagan for saving a boy who was involved in a car accident in Carroll County; and

WHEREAS, after his successful tenure with the Virginia State Police, Allan Burke decided to run for clerk of the Montgomery County Circuit Court; he was first elected to the position in 1991 and then won a second term in 1999, serving for a total of 16 years; and

WHEREAS, during his second term as clerk, Allan Burke was appointed to the Cullen Commission by the Speaker of the House of Delegates, William J. Howell; the Cullen Commission, named after former Attorney General Richard Cullen, interviewed and screened candidates for the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of Virginia prior to their election by the General Assembly; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his busy professional life, Allan Burke has always been active in his community; he is a member and the treasurer of the Montgomery County Gideons, a member and the recruitment chairman for the Montgomery County Republican Party, and a member and former deacon of Gateway Baptist Church; and

WHEREAS, Allan Burke has been especially active with the Christiansburg Lions Club, of which he has been a member for 15 years and is the current president-elect, serving on various committees and as a board member; and

WHEREAS, Allan Burke has been an exemplary public servant, dedicating himself with great professionalism and integrity to the citizens of Montgomery County and the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Allan C. Burke on his years of service as a law-enforcement officer and circuit court clerk; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Allan C. Burke as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and gratitude for his commitment to public service.
