Celebrating the life of Private First Class Christopher Edward Murphy.

WHEREAS, United States Army Private First Class Christopher Edward Murphy, age 21, a resident of Campbell County and formerly of Gladys, was killed in the line of duty on May 12, 2007, while valiantly serving his country near Baghdad in Iraq; and

WHEREAS, Christopher "Chris" Edward Murphy was born in Barnstable, Massachusetts, and he was the devoted son of Rosemary Murphy Balian and Darryl Balian; and

WHEREAS, Chris Murphy graduated from William Campbell High School in 2004, was a defensive lineman on the school’s state championship football team in 2002, and even in high school knew that he wanted to serve his country in the military; and

WHEREAS, Private First Class Murphy was assigned to Company D, 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division stationed in Fort Drum, New York, and he was a member of a small patrol base that moved troops from heavily defended posts to live and work among the Iraqi people; and

WHEREAS, Private First Class Murphy was among four troops that were killed in an ambush at a stationary observation post trying to interdict terrorists that had placed roadside bombs; and

WHEREAS, those who knew him well will remember Chris Murphy for his quiet yet cheerful nature, his dedication to duty and strong work ethic, and “the way he could make friends and loved ones smile”; he had recently returned home on leave for Mother's Day and visited with his mother, grandmother, and other family members; and

WHEREAS, Private First Class Murphy will be greatly missed by his parents and grandparents; his two brothers William and James Bennett and his sister Shawna; and many other loving relatives and friends; and

WHEREAS, Private First Class Murphy's death is a reminder of the perils faced daily by the thousands of Americans who serve in our armed forces overseas and whose devotion to duty places them in harm's way; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a courageous and patriotic young Virginian, Private First Class Christopher Edward Murphy; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Private First Class Christopher Edward Murphy as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of Virginia.
