Commending Doris Jackson.

WHEREAS, Doris Jackson was named Arlington Public Schools’ Principal of the Year and the winner of The Washington Post’s Distinguished Educational Leadership Award for Arlington in 2007; and

WHEREAS, a native of Washington, D.C., Doris Jackson received her bachelor’s degree in English from the District of Columbia Teachers College in 1968 and earned a master’s degree in teaching with an emphasis in guidance and counseling from Trinity College in 1973; and

WHEREAS, Doris Jackson began her outstanding career in education as a high school English teacher in the Washington, D.C., public schools in 1968; and

WHEREAS, an innovative educator for 39 years, Doris Jackson joined the Arlington Public Schools as the director of counseling services at Wakefield High School in 1990, was named assistant principal in 1998, and was appointed principal of Wakefield High School in 2002; and

WHEREAS, during her tenure, Doris Jackson has provided leadership in many successful programs, including the AP Network, which gives students the opportunity to take college-level courses in high school and receive college credit; the Foundation for Academic Success for ninth graders, which is designed to prepare students for success in the intellectual, social, and physical domains of adulthood; and the Cohort Program for Minority Males, a group that recognizes the needs of college-bound African-American and Hispanic males and keeps them on the path to higher education; and

WHEREAS, Doris Jackson was instrumental in the establishment of the United Minority Women and the Sister Circle, support groups that help minority students realize their academic goals; and

WHEREAS, Doris Jackson helped create the Wakefield Academy for Careers in Medicine, which exposes students to a variety of careers and professions in the field of medicine; and

WHEREAS, under Doris Jackson’s guidance, Wakefield High School received the 2006 Inspiration Award from the College Board as one of three schools in the country recognized for outstanding work with diverse populations; and

WHEREAS, Doris Jackson received the Arlington NAACP Community Service Award in 2007 and was one of five principals from across the country who were featured in the Newsweek magazine article “The Principal Principle”; and

WHEREAS, a talented and dedicated administrator, Doris Jackson is a great supporter of her fellow educators and an excellent mentor and role model for her students; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Doris Jackson on her well-deserved recognition as Arlington Public Schools’ Principal of the Year and the winner of the Distinguished Educational Leadership Award for Arlington County; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Doris Jackson as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and gratitude for her commitment to the young people of Arlington County and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
