Commending Harry F. Atherton.

WHEREAS, Harry F. Atherton, a respected citizen and former member of the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors, retired in December 2007 after longtime public service to his fellow citizens and his community; and

WHEREAS, Harry F. Atherton was born on March 24, 1945, and has been a lifelong resident of Fauquier County; and

WHEREAS, Harry Atherton received a bachelor of arts degree from Harvard University in 1967, earned a juris doctor degree from Catholic University in 1974, and honorably served his country in the United States Army in the Vietnam War; and

WHEREAS, a respected businessman and community supporter, Harry Atherton has been a cattle farmer near Orlean, Virginia, for 31 years; and

WHEREAS, Harry Atherton was elected to the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors from the Marshall Magisterial District for the terms 2000 - 2003 and 2004 - 2007 and served as chairman in 2003, 2004, and 2007, and as vice-chairman in 2005 - 2006; and

WHEREAS, Harry Atherton has served on the Potomac River Basin Roundtable, Rappahannock River Basin Commission, Potomac Watershed Roundtable, and Conservation Roundtable and has been a tireless champion of open-space preservation and land conservation; and

WHEREAS, over the years, Harry Atherton has generously given his time and talents to many civic organizations, including as a member of the Leeds Ruritan Club and Marshall Business and Residents Association; and he served for 19 years as a member of the Fauquier County Planning Commission, six years as chairman; and

WHEREAS, Harry Atherton is a faithful member of Leeds Church and is supportive of the church’s numerous missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, in his well-deserved retirement, Harry Atherton will share quality time and new adventures with his wife, Anne Douglass Atherton, and their two daughters, Hope and Lily; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Harry F. Atherton for his longtime and outstanding service to the citizens of Fauquier County; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Harry F. Atherton as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for his many achievements and best wishes for a joyful and rewarding retirement.
